Comparative Quantification of Health Risks

WHO press release, May 2005: http://www.who.int/mediacentre/news/new/2005/nw04/en/index.html

Table of content: http://www.who.int/bookorders/MDIbookPDF/Book/11500554.pdf

".The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 20 major risk factors are responsible for almost half of the approximately 57 million deaths that occur each year. The effects of risk factors on people's health is examined in detail in the newly published Comparative Quantification of Health Risks. It estimates deaths and disability from preventable causes of major diseases and compares the impact of 26 major risk factors for disease and injury to help policymakers and researchers compare health risks around the world.

One major finding is that three chronic disease risk factors, tobacco use, raised blood pressure and raised cholesterol, are among the top ten causes of disease in all regions

Comparative Quantification of Health Risks, a two-volume set, is published by WHO. The project was funded by the US National Institute of Aging. A CD-ROM with detailed tables on aspects of disease burden caused by these risk factors accompanies the volumes.

WHO site. WHO Global InfoBase

The WHO Global InfoBase has assembled in one place, country level risk factor data stratified by age and sex, with complete source and survey information. The current version of the InfoBase contains over 45,000 data points from more than 2,000 sources. The NCD InfoBase contains data for 170 out of 192 WHO Member States. A unique feature is that each record can be linked back to all its survey information, including the primary source. This is important when the collection of such data involves so many different protocols and definitions.

The Global WHO NCD InfoBase is based on 3 main types of data collections:
The source of the data; The information about survey methods; The age/sex stratified data.

WHO site. SuRF Reports

http://www.who.int/ncd_surveillance/infobase/web/SuRFReports/en/index.aspx

The SuRF Report I introduces the WHO Global InfoBase, which assembles, for the first time in one place, NCD risk factor data collected from WHO Member States. Data from the InfoBase is presented in the country profiles of the SuRF report and its associated CD-ROM attachment. Displaying the currently available data is the first step towards improving NCD risk factor data collections. This is an on-going process. In the next step (SuRF 2), the available country data will be used to produce comparable estimates for risk factor prevalence in WHO Member States. This will result in an advocacy tool with the power to transform health policy by highlighting the need for primary prevention and health promotion.
