CADTM indignant at the U.S. nomination of
Paul Wolfowitz to lead the World Bank.  (excerpted)

George W. Bush has just announced his choice of Paul Wolfowitz, No. 2 at
the Pentagon and a staunch supporter of the illegal invasion of Iraq in
2003, as the next president of the World Bank.

CADTM is indignant that this particularly anti-democratic procedure is
still in force at a time when good governance is at the heart of the
recommendations of these institutions.
CADTM is also indignant that World Bank leadership systematically goes
to major names in banking or to former officers of the U.S. Defense
Department, as was the case with the 1968 nomination of Robert McNamara,
chief architect of the Vietnam war, and who used the World Bank as an
effective geopolitical tool to serve the United States’ strategic
allies.

CADTM calls on the European administrators to block this unacceptable
decision.

PARIS, 16 mars 2005 (AFP) - Le Comité pour l'annulation de la dette du
tiers monde (CADTM) "s'indigne" mercredi, dans un communiqué, de la
proposition des Etats-Unis de nommer Paul Wolfowitz à la présidence de
la
Banque mondiale, une procédure "particulièrement antidémocratique"
selon lui.
"George W. Bush vient d'annoncer sa décision de proposer Paul Wolfowitz,
"numéro deux du Pentagone et partisan acharné de l'invasion illégale de
l'Irak en 2003" comme candidat au poste de président de la Banque
mondiale,
affirme le Comité.
"Le CADTM s'indigne du fait que cette procédure particulièrement
antidémocratique est toujours en vigueur alors que la bonne gouvernance
est
au
coeur des recommandations de ces institutions", note-t-il.
Il "s'indigne ensuite du fait que la présidence revient toujours à de
grands banquiers ou à d'anciens responsables du ministère de la Défense
des
Etats-Unis".
Le CADTM appelle "les administrateurs européens à bloquer cette décision
inadmissible".
