Dear Colleagues,

Small arms as well as light weapons kills hundreds of thousands each year and injure many more. Much of information on violence and the prevention of violence has recently received a comprehensive review in the first ever World report on violence and health, released by the WHO in October 2002.
Among the important recommendations in this respect, were the call to support evidence-based approaches for the prevention of violence and evaluation of model prevention programmers.
In different countries, Small Arms kills many people every year; 35,000 in Brazil, 10,000 in South Africa, and 30,000 in the USA, 20,000 in Colombia and the number of violent deaths from small arms in Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala exceeded those that had occurred in the respective civil wars.
It is agreed that this public health issue needs further research on its health and socio-economic impacts in other countries and regions of the world.

I think that it is important to add more lights on this global epidemic in our PHM agenda.
