HEALTH RESEARCH

KEY PURPOSE
To contribute to the academic, research, professional and administrative activities of the Department of Public Health. 
Develop and teach undergraduate and post-graduate topics relating to social-science based public health research and develop a focus on teaching and research in health inequities and social epidemiology within the department.

ORGANISATIONAL ENVIRONMENT
The Department of Public Health is part of the School of Medicine of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Flinders University.
We aim to promote health and healthy environments in Australia and overseas by advocating for and advancing multi-disciplinary public health research, teaching and practice.
All of our postgraduate courses are based on adult learning models and can be delivered entirely through distance education (flexible delivery) mode.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

.	Co-ordinate a post-graduate degree, initially, Doctor of Public Health, a course work professional doctorate.
.	Undertake supervision of PhD students
.	Contribute, through grant applications, publications, research team membership and successful grants to the Department's research program on the social and economic determinants of health in particular the developing Australian Health Inequities Program
.	Develop a focus on social -science based public health research especially social epidemiology in the Department
.	Develop and teach undergraduate and post-graduate topics relating to social-science based public health research, social and economic determinants of health and research transfer processes
.	Develop industry links in relation to health inequities and social science based public health research in order to provide expert advice and workforce development.
.	Contribute to the administration of the Department and, where appropriate, other parts of the University, as well as engage in professional or community service.
.	Promote and provide a safe working environment for students, staff and visitors with attention to the requirements of the Occupational Health Safety and Welfare Act, the Workers Rehabilitation and Compensation Act and Equal Opportunity legislation. WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
The successful applicant will be part of a team of academic and research staff who through successful grant applications, contribute to the Department's teaching and research programs on the social and economic determinants of health.

SELECTION CRITERIA
(Note for intending applicants - applicants should address each selection criterion individually and should argue their case by citing evidence to support their claims rather than presenting a list of facts only).
Essential criteria
1.	PhD in an area related to research on social and economic determinants of health
2.	Strong publication record related to research on social and economic determinants of health, especially using quantitative methods.
3.	Demonstrated understanding and application of epidemiology and statistical techniques to social and economic factors affecting population health status.
4.	Experience in teaching public health at undergraduate or post-graduate level.
5.	Demonstrated capacity to translate social public health research into policy and practice.
6.	Demonstrated record of attracting competitive research funding.

Desirable criteria
1.	Demonstrated success supervising PhD students to successful completion.
2.	Experience teaching on-line or in distance mode.
3.	Experience of degree co-ordination at post-graduate level.
4.	Demonstrated experience of applying of social epidemiology methods such as multi-level techniques and path analysis.
5.	Experience in networking with other public health research groups. Appointment at Level D will be contingent on the essential criteria being met at a higher level. The selection committee will be particularly looking for demonstrated strength in essential criteria 3 to 6 and candidates will be asked to provide evidence of their strength in these areas. In addition, desirable criteria 1 to 5 will need to be met for appointment to Level D.
