August 30, 2004: Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign Holds a Successful, Unpermitted, Peaceful March for Our Lives

After stating for over a year that the Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign would march with or without a permit on August 30th, refusing to give up the freedoms that people have died for, we stepped forward yesterday to continue the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr . to build a multiracial, intergenerational movement of the poor. 

After a rally at the United Nations where the poor from across this country spoke along with members of the clergy, artists and representatives of the poor from around the world the unpermitted march began under the banner of the Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign. We marched yesterday being led by people in wheelchairs and crutches, children and the elderly followed by veterans, immigrants, and poor and homeless people from around the nation together united and talking about the issues that face poor people.

Despite not having a permit, thousands of marchers stepped into the streets of downtown Manhattan in a peaceful, nonviolent march that stretched for blocks as it made its way to Madison Square Garden, the site of the Republican National Convention. The Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign's march yesterday was nothing short of a tremendous success as we were able to ensure that poor people in this country have a voice and bring their message of the economic human rights to housing, healthcare, living wage jobs and education all the way to Madison Square Garden.

At Madison Sqaure Garden, the site of the Republican National Convention, we left a "Citizens' Arrest of George W. Bush for Crimes Against Humanity." At the march we were accompanied by International Human Rights Observers, including Nora Cortinas of the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo (Linea Fundadora) of Argentina; Alexis Ponce of the Inter-American Platform for Human Rights, Democracy and Development, from Ecuador; and Jan Flaherty from England.

The unfortunate conflict between a demonstrator and a police officer that also occurred in Manhattan last evening had no relationship to the Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign's march and we refuse for our organizing efforts and successful peaceful march to be destroyed by attempts to connect this to our march and to silence the message of poor people in America on this important day. We are a peaceful, nonviolent movement that refuses to be made to disappear. Our continued gratitude goes out to the independent media, independent filmmakers and reporters that are committed to telling the truth in the fight to ensure the visibility of the poor in America.

30 de agosto, 2004: La Campaña de los Pobres por los Derechos Humanos Económicos Sostiene una Marcha Exitosa, No-Permitida y Pacífica

Después de declarar por más que un año su compromiso con marchar con o sin permiso el 30 de Agosto, la Campaña de los Pobres por los Derechos Humanos Económicos negó a ceder las libertades que personas murieron para protegir, y tomó pasos adelante ayer para continuar la herencia de Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. a construir un movimiento multi-racial, inter-generacional de los pobres.

Después de una manifestación fuera de las Naciones Unidas en que personas pobres de todas partes del país hablaron tanto como miembros de la comunidad religiosa, artistas, y representantes de los pobres de todo el mundo, la marcha no-permitida empezó bajo la bandera de la Campaña de los Pobres por los Derechos Humanos Económicos.

Marchamos ayer con personas en sillas de ruedas y con entrepiernas, los niños y los de tercera edad en el frente de la marcha, seguido por veteranos, inmigrantes, y pobres y personas sin hogar de todas partes de la nación, todos unidos juntos y enfocados en los asuntos que se enfrentan los pobres. 

A pesar de no tener un permiso, miles de manifestantes marcharon por las calles del centro de Manhattan en una marcha pacífica y no-violenta que alargaba por muchas cuadras mientras caminamos hacia Madison Square Garden, el sitio de la Convención Nacional Republicana. La marcha ayer de la Campaña de los Pobres por los Derechos Humanos Económicos fue nada menos que un éxito tremendo mientras aseguramos que se escuchasen las voces de los pobres en este país y que se oyese la demanda por los derechos humanos económicos a vivienda, cuidado medico, trabajos con sueldos justos, y educación.

Al terminar la marcha, dejamos en frente del sitio de la Convencion Republicana un "aresto cuidadano" para George W. Bush, por cometer "Crimenes en Contra de la Humanidad." Nos acompanaron en la marcha Observadores Internacionales de Derechos Humanos, entre ellos Nora Cortinas de las Madres de la Plaza de Mayo, Linea Fundadora, de Argentina;  Alexis Ponce de la Plataforma Inter-Americana por los Derechos Humanos, la Democracia y el Desarrollo, de Ecuador; y Jan Flaherty de Inglaterra.

El conflicto desafortunado entre un manifestante y un miembro de la policia que también ocurrió en Manhatton anoche no tenía conexion con la marcha de la Campaña de los Pobres por los Derechos Humanos Económicos. Rechazamos la posibilidad que nuestros esfuerzos a organizar y a marchar pacíficamente pudieran ser destruidos por intentos a vincular el conflicto con nuestra marcha. También rechazamos los intentos a silenciar el mensaje de los pobres en los EEUU este día importante. Somos un movimiento pacífico y no-violento que se niega ser desaparecido. Enviamos nuestra gratitud a los medios de comunicacion independientes, a los fotógrafos y periodistas independientes que tienen un compromiso a contar la verdad en la lucha a asegurar la visibilidad de los pobres en América.
