Announcing Making Pregnancy SAFER: A RESIDENTIAL short-course for Health Managers JulY 19-31, 2004 at Trivandrum, INDIA

Pregnancy and childbirth are the leading causes of disability and death among women between the ages of 15 and 49. Because they are avoidable, disability and death from pregnancy and childbirth are a social injustice. These can be addressed effectively through political, legal and health systems in every country. During the decade and a half since the launch of the Safe Motherhood Initiative in 1987, model programmes have been developed, new technologies tested and research has been conducted in a wide range of settings. Important lessons have been learned through this process, which would be important for health managers to know. The proposed short course aims to acquaint health managers with these developments in the field and to provide a public health perspective on making pregnancy safer and pregnancy-care more effective.

The course organiser, Achutha Menon Centre for Health Science Studies (AMCHSS), is a wing of Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Trivandrum. AMCHSS is dedicated to public health training. The Centre currently offers graduate and post-graduate programs and specialized short courses in public health.
