           NGO HIV/AIDS Code of Practice

In recent years there has been a growing global commitment to address the HIV/AIDS crisis. The urgent need to rapidly scale up HIV/AIDS response is presenting new challenges, particularly in ensuring that the lessons learnt to date are used to guide allocation of resources and development of new programmes and services.
Through the development of this Code of Good Practice for NGOs involved in HIV/AIDS response this project aims to:

. outline, and build wider commitment to, the principles, practices and evidence base that underscores successful NGO HIV/AIDS work

. assist 'Supporting NGOs' * to improve the quality and cohesiveness of their work and their accountability to their NGO partners and beneficiary communities

. foster greater collaboration between the wide variety of Supporting NGOs now actively engaged in responding to the HIV/AIDS pandemic and

. reinvigorate the 'voice' of NGOs in the HIV/AIDS response by committing to a shared advocacy agenda.

(* See Who is the Code for in About the Code below)

THE DRAFT CODE IS AVAILABLE FOR COMMENT! We are now engaging in consulting on the Draft Code with a wide range of NGOs and other stakeholders. See About the consultation process below.

About the Code Project (pdf file)
This is the background briefing paper which has been updated to reflect some changes to the timeframe for the project agreed by the Steering Committee in March 2004. Already the project has generated considerable interest. Given this, the Project Steering Committee has decided to extend the time frame to ensure sufficient time for consultations and for analysis of the inputs in order to revise the Draft Code.

            The brief includes information about:
. What the Code is for
. Who the Code is for
. How the project came about
            . Project governance and management
            . Key milestones

            Consultation process (pdf file)
            This document includes information about:
. Types and scope of consultations
            . Who can participate
. Translations of the Draft Code
. Guidance for comments on the Draft Code.

We warmly welcome your involvement in this initiative.
