"...The AIDS pandemic in the 21st. century continues to have devastating impacts on populations, particularly in the developing world. Since the beginning of the epidemic two decades ago, more than 20 million people have died of AIDS.
Twice that many-40 million-are now living with HIV. Barring some major breakthrough, most of these people are expected to die during the next 10 years or so. 

In 2001, the Joint United Nations Programme on AIDS (UNAIDS) estimated that 5 million people were newly infected with HIV.
