What 87.5 billion dollars will buy in Afghanistan and Iraq
WASHINGTON, Nov 3 (AFP) - A summary of key areas which Monday's US Congress 87.5 billion dollar emergency supplemental spending bill for Iraq and Afghanistan will go to:
64.7 billion dollars for military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, including:
-- 39.2 billion dollar for Operation Iraqi Freedom (Iraq), Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) and Operation Noble Eagle (war on terrorism), including one billion dollars to support coalition partners.
-- 17.8 billion dollars for salaries and benefits of active, guard and reserve military personnel activated for duty in Iraq, Afghanistan and other areas.
-- 5.5 billion dollars for procurement, including an additional 62.1 million dollars for improved armor for Humvee armored vehicles.
-- 333.8 million for military research, development and evaluation
-- 658 million for the Defense Health Program.
21.2 billion dollars for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of Iraq and Afghanistan, including:
-- 18.4 billion dollars for security, rehabilitation and reconstruction in Iraq, including 100 million dollars for "democracy building" activities to support the writing of a constitution and the holding of national elections.
-- 983 million dollars for operating expenses for the Coalition Provisional Authority.
-- 16.6 million dollar for secure facilities for the US Agency for International Development (USAID) in Iraq and Afghanistan.
-- 38 million dollars for operating expenses of USAID associated with Iraq and Afghanistan.
-- 872 million dollars to continue political and economic development programs in Afghanistan.
-- 170 million dollars for State Department narcotics control, law enforcement, nonproliferation, anti-terrorism and demining programs in Afghanistan.
-- 287 million dollars for programs and activities for the new Afghan Army.
-- 50 million dollars for peacekeeping expenses in Iraq related to additional foreign armed forces.
-- 35 million dollars for anti-terrorism training and equipment in Afghanistan.
Also included in the bill:
-- 200 million dollars for Liberia
-- 200 million dollars for Jordan
-- 20 million dollars for Sudan.
