PROCESSION ON 23RD AUGUST 2003-08-26

 

The People's Health Movement Kenya procession, led by the Kenya Ports Authority Long Trailer in various flag colours was flagged off by Kenya Government Chief at 10.00 a.m. at Changamwe round about.

 

The procession composed of various groups from different backgrounds/walks was led in the matching by Kenya Scouts and Girl Guides and HIV/AIDS Peer Educators.  The matching was on the main Nairobi Mombasa Road.  All guests from outside and within Kenya joined the colourful match/procession with songs supporting "FREE HEALTH FOR ALL".

 

All the guests were clad in the PHM Kenya launch colourful T-shirts.  The procession carried PHM Kenya banner and flag.   The flag bore the theme for our Launch in Kiswahili (National language) "AFYA KWA WOTE"(Health for all).

 

The procession reached the meeting venue at 11.00 a.m. where other groups joined in songs and dance and slogans to remember Alma Ata anniversary.

 

PROGRAMME

 

After entertainment for one hour, the programme of the day commenced.  Registration of visitors continued and we recorded about 650 participants representing groups from different backgrounds.  Kenya Press news reporters, radio and television reporters covered the function. 

 

INTRODUCTION - was done and the programme continued.

 

- Hans Bollinger of EPN - Explained the work of Ecumenical Pharmaceutical network.  He is Pharmacist by profession.  He was grateful to have been invited for the launch.

 

 

 

- Annelies Den Boer of WEMOS Netherlands.  Expressed happiness to be invited.  She explained       

her work in WEMOS.

 

- Mwajuma - PHM East Africa Co-ordinator congratulated PHM Kenya for managing to launch without any assistance from the Secretariat and she urged other East African  countries to follow suit.  She praised the cordial relationship Mr Orondo had with local Kenyan companies like Kenya Ports Authority, CIN, the Government and all other groups collaborating with PHM Kenya.  Looking at the crowd, she said that she was impressed at what she saw and she felt honoured as the East African PHM focal person.

 

She explained about PHM East Africa formation in Dar Esalaam 2002.  She explained more about Alma Ata and the million signatures.   She gave out forms to be signed.

 

- Alice Drito - Focal person Unganda. - Congratulated Kenya and said it was a challenge to other countires.  She said Kenya was the only country which had come up with such a launch and a brochure.  She promised to follow suit.  She explained what HEPS Uganda is doing in networking.

 

- Asumpta - HEPS Uganda - Said she was impressed by Kenyas example of self drive.  She explained HEPS work on coalition on medicine legislation campaign.  HEPS has organised  processions to oppose bad Government laws on medicine.

 

-  Aeshi Kisandu - FODECO - Foundation of Living Things, Education, Care and Support for most vulnerable children and orphans in Coastal area (Bagamoyo) Tanzania.  She commended PHM Kenya.  She explained the work of her organisation with vulnerable orphans.  She called for closer collaboration among all organisations in East Africa to improve health.

 

- Malachi O Orondo - PHM Kenya Focal person (National Co-ordinator). - Thanked all visitors from far and around for coming to grace the occasion.

 

He thanked those who supported PHM Kenya to take off especially CIN (Samuel Ochieng') and KPA  co-operation which offered the Guest of Honour, all 60 Peer Educators, their Long Trailer, Matron and Co-ordinators.  He explained brief history of PHM Kenya beginning from G K Savar 2000, Dar Es Salaam April, May 2002, Arusha September 2002, Nairobi November 5th 2002, when Dr Ravi and Thelma visited Kenya.  He explained that PHM Kenya has members in Mombasa, Nairobi, Kisumu,  Sawagongo, Usenge, South Nyanza and Kisii.  He welcomed more to join both individually and organisations.  He introduced PHM Kenya Committee.

 

- Chief Mwijaa Badi (Government representative) - Praised the course objectives of  PHM and promised to give his full support for success of the organisation.  He called on more organisations to come forward through PHM and improve Health in Mombasa and Kenya as a whole.

 

The Meeting ended at 17 hrs.  Mr Orondo and his committee led guests to visit PHM office where a group photograph was taken.
