Journalists have an extremely difficult, often dangerous job.
Some face harassment, intimidation, jailing, death threats.
Despite these dangers, journalists continue to play an important role as
investigators, mediators, reformers, objective storytellers and as
facilitators of the free flow of information.
The role of the media as a watchdog of government and the corporate sector
is crucial. But many policies and rules (often not written) prevent the
media from exercising that role as transmitters of new ideas and
information, as catalysts for change.
But on the down side, there is also the negative effects that an unethical
or irresponsible press can cause to society.
An independent press is essential for sound and equitable economic and
social development. It can give a voice to the poor and the disenfranchized
and allow for a more free and transparent society... Hold them accountable
for this.
