Tobacco company bosses named in fraud charges

A major tobacco company and eight of its executives knowingly sold
cigarettes to smugglers in the 1990s, costing Canadian governments
$1.2 billion in lost tax revenue, the RCMP alleged yesterday.
The force held a news conference to announce criminal charges —
six counts of fraud and one of conspiracy against JTI-Macdonald
Corp., the eight individuals and three associated companies in the
United States.

Although senior Mounties provided few details of their investigation,
they said cigarettes and tobacco produced at the company's facilities
in Montreal and Puerto Rico were exported legally to the U.S.
