Law Being Enacted to discourage Smoking: Minister

Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said a 
law is being enacted to discourage smoking reports UNB.

" In the proposed law, cigarette advertising through print and electronic 
media or billboard would be banned" He told the leaders of Anti-Tobacco 
Alliance at a meeting in Dhaka on Monday.

Many People are not aware of harmful effects of smoking or taking tobacco, 
he said adding availing the advantage tobacco companies were attracting the 
smokers through fancy advertisements.

Money spent for treatment of tobacco-related diseases in much higher than 
that of revenue earned from tobacco sector, the health minister told the 
anti-tobacco leaders.

Stressing on Building consciousness about harmful effects of smoking among 
the school goers, he called upon the anti-tobacco organisations for 
strengthening anti-tobacco movement and creating mass awareness about 
tobacco intake.

Health Secretary Fazlur Rahman, alliance Leaders Dr Arup Ratan Cowdhury, 
Iqbal Masud, Syed Mahbubul Alam, Anjman Akter and Adv Rafiqul Islam were 
present.
