Dear colleagues,

Please find hereunder the objective 3 of the 2002-04 plan for AHILA. Thank
you for commenting, suggesting or undertaking the activity.

AHILA Objective 3

AHILA is requested to create an African Core collection or a recommended
selection of the essential material that every medical library should stock.

We are not looking for a definitive list of titles, but just a recommended
selection of relevant and essential material that every medical library
should stock.

With new initiatives like HINARI, PERI and the Health InterNetwork, this
core list should include list of URLs where AHILA members can access online
health-related resources.

This list should also be generic, with a possibility to adapt it in each
country and add local titles.

How should the list be put together, selected, maintained? Richard Jones
(BMA Information Working Group) has indicated he would be willing to share
methods used by them for their Core Collection.

How can publishers be encouraged to help and to make their titles more
available (for example, might it be useful to put sample chapters of
essential textbooks on a CD-ROM for use as a procurement tool).

How could the list be made to complement existing resources (eg INASP Health
Links)?

It's worth also bearing in mind the current study being undertaken by Roger
Drew, former director of Healthlink Worldwide.

2003

Mes chers collegues,

Liste Francophone:

Jonas Mutwaza, Email: mutwaza at nur.ac.rw
Cheikh Omar Diawara, Email: codiawra at caramail.com

Nance Njamtu-Sie, Email: nancemjamtusie at yahoo.com

Calendrier: Le groupe fera un rapport d'etape vers 31 Mai 2003
