Bombing in Mombasa, Kenya:

PEOPLE'S HEALTH MOVEMENT condemns the attack on civilians in Mombasa, Kenya.

People's Health Movement (PHM), a global coalition, strongly condemns the recent attack on civilians in Mombasa, Kenya. The bomb blast on 29th November 2002 killed 15 people (9 Kenyans, 3 Israeli tourists and 3 persons thought to be involved or responsible) apart from injuring 80 people.

"In the name of People's Health Movement and its constituent networks, we would like to express shock and indignation at these violent acts," said Dr. Qasem Choudhury, the co-ordinator for the People's Health Movement. "We extend condolences to the victims and their families and hope for a speedy recovery for all those wounded in the bombing'', said Mwajuma S Masaiganah, PHM facilitator for Africa.

Kenyan Red Cross is the only humanitarian agency that has been provided access to the victims (initial stages); however, members of PHM network are monitoring the situation and will extend their possible support to provide medical assistance, if required. Many of the constituents of the PHM's global coalition are from Africa.

The PHM condemns the violence perpetuated against civilians and considers it as a crime against humanity. Health services are one of the worst affected in such situations. As a global coalition that also has many frontline humanitarian workers as it members, violence in general and wars, conflicts and acts of terror in particular, is a matter of grave concern for the PHM.

"War, violence, conflict and natural disasters devastate communities and destroy human dignity. They have a severe impact on the physical and mental health of their members, especially women and children" says the People's Charter for Health, a guiding spirit of the PHM. The People's Charter for Health is the largest consensus document on earth endorsed by people from nearly 100 countries that were developed during the People's Health Assembly in December 2000.

The Charter also calls upon the people of the world to support campaigns and movements for peace and disarmament and support people's initiatives to achieve a just and lasting peace, especially in countries with experiences of civil war and genocide.

People's Health Movement is a people-oriented global initiative that evolved out of the People's Health Assembly, a historic summit that was held in December 2000 in Bangladesh, at Savar, on the campus of Gonoshasthaya Kendra (GK - People's Health Centre). Over 1453 participants from nearly 100 countries met for the People's Health Assembly that was the culmination of 18 months of preparatory action around the globe.
