> risk behaviour shifts, and the adoption of 'developed country' lifestyles.
> This programme supports innovative research that will identify and
quantify
> the impact of population change on the main determinants of morbidity and
> mortality at a population-based level and its implication on health
services
> and policy research.

> Globally, demographic and socio-economic changes are shifting the patterns
> of diseases resulting in a profound impact on healthcare delivery,
> especially in developing/resource poor countries. To promote research that
> addresses these issues, the Trust has made some major awards to a number
of
> centres of excellence in south east Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.

> centres act as regional foci for research into local health issues and
also
> contribute to the strengthening of research capacity. The Latin American
> region offers an excellent science base from which to address common
> challenges and opportunities facing researchers and health policymakers in
> the area of population change.

> Awards to Centres of Excellence in Latin America initiative to develop
> innovative research into the Health Consequences of Population Change in
> Latin American countries.

> The Wellcome Trust wishes to support multidisciplinary research on the
> impact on health of demographic and societal changes taking place in the
> region, comparative studies across countries or cities, health sector
reform
> or health systems research, as well as cost-effectiveness and
sustainability
> of any intervention strategies. Proposals should be shaped by regional
> priorities and local facilities and should address the main objectives of
> this initiative:

 *       To support research into issues that are of major public health
> significance in Latin American countries;

> *       To enhance collaboration between institutions and between social
and
> biomedical sciences to address the changing dynamics in society and its
> impact on health;

> *       To strengthen research capacity and relevant training
opportunities
