Swedish Delegation Deported
April 14th, 2002

A delegation of people from the Swedish "Palestinian Solidarity Group" has
been refused entry into Israel. Two of the delegates are doctors and were
attempting to come to the West bank in order to carry out an assessment of
the current medical situation - a project that is funded by the Swedish
government.

Initially the group was detained, not permitted by the security at Ben
Gurion to call their consulates or anyone else. They were held for a few
hours - incommunicado, and then forcefully deported.

This is not the first time such events have occurred. Many foreigners
attempting to come to the West bank or Gaza Strip have been prevented from
doing so and deported. Dr. Mustafa Barghouti believes "it is all part of
Sharon's attempt to isolate completely the Palestinians - and to prevent
people from witnessing the atrocious situation here in Palestine - this
humanitarian nightmare".
