Dear friends

Ref : Healthy Documents : a source book of important documents and instruments that impact on people's health

Greetings from the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA). Several WABA representatives participated in the People's Health Assembly (PHA), which was held at Savar, Bangladesh from 4 to 8 December 2000. While at PHA, WABA together with other breastfeeding organisations like IBFAN had conducted the following three workshops:

i) Maternity Protection, Child Survival and Maternal Health;
ii) Social Mobilisation for Women's and Children's Health; and
iii) The Code, Companies and Babies.

I) Healthy Documents

Another contribution WABA made towards the PHA was to compile a series of key health documents into a source book known as " Healthy Documents : a sourcebook of important documents and instruments that impact on people's health." A draft was presented to many representatives at the PHA where we sought the views of some key participants. Their responses have been overwhelming and we have tried to incorporate as many suggestions as possible since December 2000 to finalise this publication.

We are pleased to inform you that the Healthy Documents is now completed and available for distribution. It contains selected resolutions, declarations and charters on health made at international meetings, as well as related UN instruments, such as international covenants, programmes and platforms of action which support these declarations.

The declarations and UN instruments are arranged in seven categories : 1) Medical Ethics, 2) Health Rights, 3) Public Health, 4) Health and Social Development, 5) Nutrition, 6) Children's Health, and 7) Women's Health.

The Healthy Documents is now available. Please let us know if you are interested in obtaining a copy. As the document is 222 pages, we would appreciate if your organisation contributes towards the cost of printing and postage. Please inform us whether :

i) you are able to pay US$15.00 for the cost of the Healthy Documents and postage;
ii) you are able to pay US$7.00 for the cost of postage only; or
iii) you are unable to pay at all

A 30% discount is available for 10 copies or more ordered. If you are a regional organisation, you may want to order bulk copies and distribute to your own network members in the region.

Please be informed that the selling price of the book is US$20.00. US$15.00 is a special rate for PHA participants.

We also intend to have a web version of the Healthy Documents available hopefully by end of 2001. This way, you can also access the documents on the web.

II) Information on WABA and Endorsement

Among the activities WABA is supporting are the World Breastfeeding Week (WBW), the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI), Mother-to-Mother Support and the Maternity Protection Campaign. WBW is WABA's main campaign. It is organised every 1-7 August (October in Canada) involving over 120 countries. WABA also supports breastfeeding and it's link to many broader serious issues such as. food security, environment, women's empowerment, human rights, and globalisation. HEALTHY DOCUMENTS
A source book of important documents
and instruments that impact on people's health
Compiled by Lakshmi Menon

Healthy Documents is a compilation of resolutions, declarations and charters on health made at international meetings and also related UN instruments, such as international covenants, treaties, programmes and platforms of action which support these declarations and which are ratified by various governments. The declarations and UN instruments are in the areas of medical ethics, health rights, public health, health and social development, nutrition, children's health and women's health. It also showcases two organisations' advocacy work as an inspiring example of implementing a UN instrument and in realising an international declaration. This publication is a source of useful information and an important action tool for advocacy to promote people's health.

The production of Healthy Documents was inspired by the People's Health Assembly (PHA) and a first draft was produced for circulation at the PHA held in December 2000 in Savar, Bangladesh.
